Reflections for Sunday, January 22, 2017: Marriage By Design–Living As Intended and Not Accidentally

We are called in the Christian faith to a life of responsibility and trust, a life of love and forgiveness, a life of meaning and purposeful service in whatever corner of humanity God has placed us.  Those who have heeded that clear call through Christ in their marriages have found, in truth, that it is precisely in their wedded relationship that they are most able to live out their Christian faith.  Our love is never perfected in this world, but it is surely in relation to our mates and children that we are most able to approximate that love which Christ has for us.     —Elizabeth Achtemeier, The Committed Marriage

What is love in marriage all about?  First of all, it is an unconditional commitment to an imperfect person!  Most people do not understand commitment when they are married because they do not yet realize how imperfect their partner is.  Commitment means you thank God for your partner in spite of the imperfections you discover.  You also thank Him for your spouse’s acceptance of your imperfections!  Married love remains stable regardless of circumstances.    —H.
